"Deficits in Software Engineering Research and Education"

(Distinguished Lecture Series in Computer Science)

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Manfred Broy

(Technical University Munich)

Software engineering is today the driving force in many application areas such as telecommunication, avionics, automotive software, automation, financial services, and many others. Nevertheless, there is still a huge gap between the state of practice and the goals and claims of software engineering. Reasons are, to some extent, shortcomings in education and research in the field of software engineering. If we identify and analyze these deficiencies, there is a chance to improve.

Prof. Dr. David Parnas

(University of Limerick, Ireland)

Computer Science and Software Engineering research have failed to improve the state of the art in software development. They have failed to address the right issues. We discuss some of the causes by making and defending 12 statements designed to be as controversial as possible (while remaining true).
