"Enzian: a cache-coherent heterogeneous research computer"
Enzian is a research computer built at ETH Zurich which combines a server-class CPU with a large FPGA in an asymmetric2-socket NUMA system. It is designed to be used individually or in a cluster to explore the design space for futurehardware and its implications for system software. Enzian is deliberately over-engineered, and (as I'll show) canreplicate the use-cases of almost all other FPGA platforms used in academic research today. Perhaps unique to Enzian isexposing the CPU's native cache-coherence protocol to applications on the FPGA, and I'll discuss the additionalopportunities this offers for research as well as the challenges we faced in interoperating with an existing coherenceprotocol not designed for this use-case. There are nine Enzian systems operational so far, being used locally at ETHand remotely by collaborators.
Bio: Timothy Roscoe is a Full Professor in the Systems Group of the Computer Science Department at ETH Zurich, where he workson operating systems, networks, and distributed systems, and is currently head of department.Mothy received a PhD in 1995 from the Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge, where he was a principaldesigner and builder of the Nemesis OS. After three years working on web-based collaboration systems at a startup inNorth Carolina, he joined Sprint's Advanced Technology Lab in Burlingame, California in 1998, working on cloud computingand network monitoring. He joined Intel Research at Berkeley in April 2002 as a principal architect of PlanetLab, anopen, shared platform for developing and deploying planetary-scale services. Mothy joined the Computer ScienceDepartment ETH Zurich in January 2007, and was named Fellow of the ACM in 2013 for contributions to operating systemsand networking research.His work has included the Barrelfish multikernel research OS, as well as work on distributed stream processors, andusing formal specifications to describe the hardware/software interfaces of modern computer systems. Mothy's currentresearch centers on Enzian, a powerful hybrid CPU/FPGA machine designed for research into systems software.
